The Cuts Are Not Inevitable, Are Avoidable, Can Be Resisted

Welcome to our website. We believe passionately that the cuts being implemented across Kirklees – and for that matter, across the country, are avoidable.

Kirklees SOS is a non-patisan network of community groups, trade unionists, service users, carers, socialists and members of the public in general. It’s goal is to coordinate the struggle against so-called austerity measures.

In November 2009 Kirklees council has admitted that it is now looking at cuts in the budget of between £250 and £400 million. The cuts will affect (and are already affecting) care for the elderly, Sure Start and nursery provision, local libraries, housing provision, support for the most vulnerable in our communities, road maintenance, sports centres – and much much more.

The source of these cuts is clear – the banker’s crisis and the Labour government bail-out. This money is now being used to boost more bonuses in the City of London, but local communities and services are being told that they will have to foot the bill and make sacrifices. This is totally unacceptable and we need to fight back.

A succesful campaign against these cuts can not succeed if we each fight our individual battles, as the council rolls out its plans, cutting one service and then another, removing one job and then later another; effectively isolating each of us. To fight the cuts we all need to join together. This drip-drip of these cuts has already begun.

We are therefore calling on all those who concerned about the impending cuts and want to protect services to join our campaign
